TOPS // DIY'D BY ME!
HAIR BY @CYDNIEG
This look is my favorite for sure! Whenever I think of Dionne I imagine her in this scene- the colorful braids, awesome color combination, and super sweet wrap shirt, it always stood out to me! I've also always wanted to do a hairstyle on myself inspired by it. When I first came up with this idea I knew instantly I wanted to achieve this look, but how?! My first issue was hair. No way would we have 7 hours to braid these girls hair before the shoot. Then the idea hit me, braid extentions!! Luckily, I had recently met this dope guurl, Cydnie! She does makeup and hair and dresses pretty awesome too - check her out here. One thing I really like about her is she's always down to create so when I hit her up to help me out she made it happen! We went to this hair shop on Pico she knew of for braiding hair and accessories before hitting goodwill to look for other styling pieces. This store was soo poppin'. It had all the cute hair accessories I remember from being a little girl. Not to mention all these fantastic natural hair products, bamboo hoop earrings, and other beauty store essentials. I lowkey cashed out on hair clips and scrunchies lol. It's def my new go-to spot.
My next issue was where was I going to find a shirt like this.. or how could I come close to achieveing that same look? I knew I hadn't seen any shirts like this and the only place I could find wrap shirts are at American Apparel for an obscene amount of money so I was kind of stumped. Then it occured to me while at the thrift store to get a long sleeve black shirt, crop it and then glue flowers on it! *Side note -Something styling has taught me is how to IMPROVISE!! It's important as a stylist, as a creative, just as a person to get really good at doing this!* Anyway, I was so unsure of how that would look or if it would photograph ok but it worked out so well! I was even lucky enough to find 2 wrap style shirts at the Goodwill!
So at the end of the day Cydnie braided up some cute extentions and I spent a couple hours fixing up the shirts and burning myself with hot glue in preperation for the shoot the next day. End product = FIRE & it feels so gooood.
